Florida Trail

Published on Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

I got to hike this weekend on the Florida Trail section on Eglin Air Force Base. It is a beautiful hike with lots to see and hear. I saw many squirrels, birds and bugs and I saw a VERY big spider, deer and an armadillo. Great hike, in great weather. Beautiful creeks and different than the AT, its FLAT!

Distant

Sorry its been so long since we posted anything. We haven’t had much of an opportunity to hike with both our wives being pregnant and family stuff going on - its tough to find the time. I guess we have to be very intentional about getting out there. The good news is that I have a coworker looking to visit the trail very soon - going to hit Springer and take some pics. Should be cool - its always fun having someone new be interested in this magical foot path.

Shortened Trip

Well, I am pretty disappointed but for our first trip this year, I am only going to be able to do a Day Hike. We will probably try out the new stove and perhaps some hiking poles, boots, etc. But not the new tent, and we won’t get to try too many MREs. Its cool though, because we may discover how out-of-shape we are. And that might be an important wake up call. We are tentatively planning a hike for May, so that will be fun. Will keep you posted.

MSR Stove Comparison

Published on Sunday, January 27th, 2008

Well, I like all the stoves that MSR offers. Went into a local supply shop and got to play around with two of them in particular. The Super Fly and Pocket Rocket. I originally thought that the Whisperlite was going to be the one for me, with the whole multi-fuel property…but frankly, I don’t get on the trail frequently enough, or for long enough hikes to justify it. So I think we are going to go with one that is bound to use the mixed fuel in the MSR canister. Also, I have heard plenty of nightmare stories about priming and setting tables on fire, etc, so lets play it safe too while we’re at it. :)

I’ll let you know which one I end up getting and also how it compares to say, Sterno.

For a good read, and frankly, one that really sold me, checkout this article: http://www.thru-hiker.com/articles.asp?subcat=2&cid=42

getting close

well, the dieting is getting tough. i took a trip about 2 weeks ago and it threw me off. actually, during the trip i was able to eat pretty well, but got out of the habit of tracking my points. so now I haven’t been walking, haven’t been tracking points and in general, i am putting the weight right back on. which is going to make hiking 10-15 mile days VERY tough. once we put our itinerary together, maybe that will motivate me to dig down and stay motivated.
